Wintermission is Coming!

From Academic Dean Courtney Ulmer and Experiential Learning Coordinator Beth O'Quinn

Wintermission is an opportunity for both students and teachers to stretch and explore new things. It will stretch our minds and our bodies as we all have the chance to participate in classes that focus on varied subjects and to take part in different afternoon activities. It is also a stretch for our campus as students journey into the local community for internships. Some juniors and seniors will have the opportunity to travel home for internships as well. This year some of our students and teachers will participate in a Service Learning trip with Youth Services Opportunity Project in Washington, DC, or a three-city tour to meet with women business leaders in New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC.
Each year Wintermission brings new classes and internships for Foxcroft students, but the opportunity to stretch and grow endures from year to year. This is why Wintermisson is a required part of our curriculum. Just like sports or math classes, Wintermission allows our students to challenge themselves, grow, and discover new things. Freshmen are strongly encouraged to remain on campus to experience the rich variety of classes they can share with students from every grade level.

Students will be selecting their Wintermission classes this month and may also apply for one of our approved local internships at that time. Some of our classes this year will include wilderness survival skills, self defense, webpage building using HTML and CSS, and learning how to create a podcast. Internships will offer opportunity to learn about biomedical engineering at K2M, a global leader in creating innovative medical solutions for complex spinal abnormalities, and to explore the business model and branding of Lou Lou, a highly successful national retail clothing store, among other offerings. Juniors and seniors who would like to apply for an internship at home over Wintermission need to fill out an Application for Wintermission Special Internship that will require the sponsorship of a local supervisor or business professional. These applications are due by January 21. Be sure to review the Foxcroft Student Internships: Guidelines and Expectations.

A full list of Wintermission classes and internships will be published next week so stay tuned for more information. We hope all our students will embrace the unique opportunities that Wintermission offers them to stretch and grow through exploration!
