Letting Creativity Shine at the Festival of Arts

A weekend dedicated entirely to the arts was a new and exciting venture this year. The Festival of Arts was born out of the desire to not only display art, but to get the entire community engaged in making art. This is exactly what we accomplished on a beautiful Saturday afternoon here at Foxcroft. Faculty, staff, and students alike explored a number of sessions and exhibits with open minds and ready hands to discover a wide array of media.

The Festival of Arts was born out of the desire to not only display art, but to get the entire community engaged in making art. This is exactly what we accomplished on a beautiful Saturday afternoon here at Foxcroft. Faculty, staff, and students alike explored a number of sessions and exhibits with open minds and ready hands to discover a wide array of media.
Currier Library welcomed visitors to view the Faculty and Staff Art Exhibit and participate in the “Songwriting” workshop hosted by Taylor Barton, a talented musician and mom to Josie S. '20. The girls in this workshop worked together to write and perform their own musical compositions. Many surprised themselves with their abilities to keep a simple tune, write an interesting rhyme, and to work in unison to deliver an original song.
Simultaneously, another visiting artist occupied the attention of many of our girls in Schoolhouse. One of this year’s Helen Cudahy Niblack ’42 Arts Lecture Series visiting artists, Mojdeh Rezaeipour, returned to conduct a “Make It/Take It” workshop, where girls made mixed-media collages on wood. They took a nature walk in Miss Charlotte’s Garden to gather materials to combine with personal and found images. The Art Room was filled with girls working with an abundance of natural and man-made objects to create their own unique compositions.
Just outside the Art Room, the ceramics wheels were set up on the outdoor patio where anyone could step in and try their hand at wheel throwing. Many visitors were delighted to successfully transform a lump of clay into a small bowl or cylinder. Everyone who tried learned to admire this incredibly difficult yet surprisingly satisfying process.
Down the hall on the main floor of Schoolhouse, two club activities engaged the community in works on paper. The Art Club combined forces with Chimera, our literary magazine, to create a station for making handmade greeting cards. Art Club members also collaborated with the Anime Club to offer lessons in character design. They got everyone involved in sketching faces and figures in this uniquely Asian style of drawing.
The Science Wing in the basement of Schoolhouse was also bustling with club activities. The Fashion Club and Blue Planet engaged visitors with a collaborative wearable art piece made entirely out of recycled materials. The STEAM Club was busy at work making custom keychains on the laser cutter. The hallways were transformed by the Science Photography Contest, which allowed visitors to vote for their favorite images in seven separate categories including: Patterns in Nature, Science in Motion, Things with Wings, Landlubbers, Microscopic Views, Aerial Perspectives, and Landscapes and Waterscapes. Watch for an announcement of the winners in next week's issue!
Perhaps most impressive, the student art on display in Schoolhouse truly set the tone for this inspiring day. Drawings, paintings, ceramics, photography, printmaking, and design work filled our walls and engaged our senses. The Senior Capstone Shows included a total of six incredibly talented girls — Izzie C., Annabelle C., Pia S., Cat W., Hyeri W., and Renee X. — who have all worked to produce the highest caliber of art during their time here at Foxcroft. They wrote elegant descriptions of their processes and engaged visitors with a unique array of art.
