In Good Company: Two Connecticut Non-Profits Share Legacy of Ruth Bedford '32

Nearly five months after Foxcroft announced the transformative $40 million gift from alumna Ruth Bedford '32, Norwalk Hospital and the Westport Weston Family YMCA jointly revealed today that they are the beneficiaries of similar bequests by Ms. Bedford.

According to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, these two Connecticut nonprofits which her family helped establish nearly a century ago will also each receive $40 million. (Read the full Chronicle of Philanthropy article here.) Ms. Bedford, who lived a simple life despite her fortune, clearly believed in the importance of giving back, a philosophy emphasized at Foxcroft and exemplified by her forebearers.

Ms. Bedford who died last year had served as a volunteer at Norwalk Hospital for more than 50 years. Her family had supported the hospital for decades, helping to establish a nursing school and construct a new building among other things. The Bedfords were also long involved in the Westport Weston Family YMCA, which her grandfather, Edward T. Bedford, helped found in 1923.

Both organizations now have the same happy challenge as Foxcroft in deciding the best use of the generous gifts. When announcing the gift last October, Foxcroft Head of School Cathy McGehee noted that the Board of Trustees had decided that the bequest would be used chiefly to enlarge and sustain the School's endowment, with some funds being used to establish a scholarship, to update and improve the theater program, and to create a matching gift challenge towards the renovation of a beloved campus building.
