Foxcroft vs. Oakcrest
Foxcroft battles against one of the state's top teams
On a very hot afternoon the Foxcroft Varsity Soccer Team had to play one of the top ranked teams in the state. Despite the heat, Foxcroft stayed neck and neck with Oakcrest and was able to go into halftime with a 0-0 tie.
In the second half, the heat continued to wear down the players and Oakcrest was able to score on a 20 yard shot from outside the box. Foxcroft didn't let that stop them and they counterattacked with one of their best plays of the game. With the excellent pressure put on by the team, they were able to force Oakcrest to commit a foul in the box and earned a penalty kick. Captain Lily McCrehin stepped up to the spot and buried a fantastic penalty. The heat and the intensity of the game were on full display as we had our backs to the wall for the last few minutes of the game. Unfortunately we were unable to clear the ball in the box and Oakcrest was able to score the winner with just over 3 minutes left in the game. Despite the loss, the team showed they can hang with the top teams in the state.
There were a lot of fantastic performances all over the field. I would like to highlight some players that were required to put in more minutes during the heat. Congratulations to Elizabeth Progar, Kate Galazommatis, Chloe Jones, and Chayla Gillespie for putting in great efforts to help the team.
Foxcroft turns around and has another top caliber team to play against as the hit the road against Virginia Academy tomorrow.
