Celebrating our Global Connections

Earlier, at Morning Meeting, fashion from across the world was on display at the International Week Fashion Show. Outfits represented eight different countries, including:

• Mexico — a Huipil, or traditionally indigenous garment worn by women across Central America, and an outfit designed and sewn by the Spanish 4 class that was inspired by Frida Kahlo’s attire. 
• Ireland — an Irish Dance costume worn for feisanna or Irish Dance competitions.
• India — a sharara worn during weddings, festivals, and many other celebrations.
• Spain — a silk shawl known as the Spanish Mantón de Manila.
• Ethiopia — a chiffon from the ethnic tribe Tigray.
• Haiti — a traditional handmade denim skirt painted with figures and details in red and blue, the colors of the Haitian flag.
• Japan — a yukata or casual version of a kimono.
• Afghanistan — a kamiz (dress), waskat (waistcoat), and shal or chador (head covering).

Many thanks to all who contributed to this weeklong celebration of the diverse cultures in our community. Special shoutouts go to the Global Cultures Club and International Ambassadors; to the performers and behind-the-scenes crew that presented the community with a fantastic Gala; to all the students who helped run Bazaar stations and decorate the Dining Hall; to the family members and Parents’ Association who donated their time or favorite treats to share with the community; to the faculty members who were integral to the planning of the week’s events; to the Dining Hall staff who prepared fantastic and flavorful menus; and to everyone who tried something different this week — be it a new food, dance, or a language — and embraced the unique opportunities to learn more about the international connections woven into the tapestry of the Foxcroft community.
