A Day of Service and Reflection Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  

From Civil Rights and Media Literacy, Music in the Civil Rights Era, and Artistic Activism in the Civil Rights Era to Servant Leadership, Civil Rights in Loudoun County, and more, students spent the morning engaged in workshops learning more about the various aspects of the Civil Rights Movement. The afternoon’s service projects ranged from making hygiene kits, snack packs, reusable sanitary napkins, birthday-in-a-bag kits, and sandwiches to sorting clothing donations and writing letters for children with cancer. 

Between the morning and afternoon activities, students gathered in the library, where community members shared remarks and music reflecting the theme “The Spirit of Service.” Thank you to Co-Head of Black Student Union Marley F. ’24; Inclusive Excellence Interns Lizema C. ’26, Ava D. ’26, and Chayla G. ’25; Sophomore Class President Kyla P. ’25; Hound Captain Eva C. ’24; Student Head of School Gracie R. ’24; Freshman Class President Natasha H. ’27; Head Prefect Emma L ’24; and Head of School Mrs. McGehee for sharing their thoughts and reflections.

“I really enjoyed both my workshop and service activity,” shared Anila S. ’25. “It made me feel like I was making a difference, and I had a great time!” 

As Dr. King coordinated efforts during the Civil Rights Movement, he worked to impact and improve the lives of all people. With service being one of our core values that guide the entire School community — this Day of Service allowed our students a space to reflect on the work done by Dr. King and others during the Civil Rights Movement and take an active role in the work that remains.
