A Relaxing Yet Engaging Wellness Weekend Opens the New Semester

Keynote speaker and alumna Alice Lane Lloyd ’97 (Gigi ’25), a nutritional therapy practitioner and certified autoimmune paleo coach, kicked off Foxcroft's annual Wellness Weekend events with an interesting and informative presentation on the health benefits of water and electrolytes versus energy drinks during last Friday's Morning Meeting.
Lloyd, who is studying for her Master of Science in Nutrition and Integrative Health, began her presentation by noting that our bodies are 60% water (10-13 gallons), which supports brain, bone, and joint health; shuttles nutrients throughout our body; regulates body temperature; and more, Lloyd also warned that water deficiency, or dehydration, can cause tiredness, irritability, anxiety, mental confusion, short and long-term memory issues, decreased attention span, cravings, cramps, headaches, and increased likelihood of urinary tract infections (UTI).

She went on to share that the appropriate daily water intake is different for everyone but can be calculated as half your body weight in ounces (ex. 150lbs/2 = 75oz), adding that if you drink a caffeinated and/or sugary beverage, you need to take the amount of that drink times two (ex. 12oz. Celsius x 2 = 24oz) and add that to the amount of water you should drink that day (ex. 75oz + 24oz = 99oz). She then challenged students to encourage each other to hit their daily goals.

Lloyd concluded her presentation by discussing the benefits of natural salts (Pink Himalayan and Celtic Grey) and the downside of processed salts (iodized table salt). Natural salts contain an anti-stress element, are a natural histamine, preserve serotonin and melatonin in the brain (vital for sleep regulation), help food absorption, prevent muscle cramps, help make bones firm, maintain muscle tone and strength, and more, versus processed salts that have been dried to over 1000 degrees essentially eliminating any nutrients that existed.

The weekend included on- and off-campus events designed to encourage students to practice wellness through exercise, reflection, and relaxation via hiking, movies, games, puzzles, yoga, reading, and more!

"Wellness Weekend was the perfect way to kick off the new year," shared Natasha H. ’27. "It was nice to come back with a closed weekend because we were able to spend time with friends, catch up, and get to know the new students. All of the options for activities made sure you never got bored, and it offered a way to bond while easing into the new semester."

Anila S. ’25 concurred, offering, “As a theater student whose weekend was consumed by play rehearsal, the one hour I spent reading in Roomies was a much-needed break. All of the activities sounded fun and they were a great way to bring the community together.”

Thank you to Dean of Students Jodi Campbell and the faculty and staff who provided a fantastic program of activities designed to help students focus on various aspects of wellness!
