Foxcroft Students and the Future of Work

By Manabi K. ’25, Global Studies Concentration student

On Tuesday, November 29, Mr. Faris Hadad-Zervos (parent of Mimi H-L ’26), the World Bank Country Director for Nepal, Maldives, and Sri Lanka, spoke to the Global Studies Concentration program and other interested students. He integrated the subject of each Global Studies Concentration student’s final project to talk about the future of the world and how it connects to our specific research.
After explaining the main objectives of the World Bank, which are to eradicate poverty and make sure prosperity is shared, Mr. Hadad-Zervos talked about how the world will continue to adapt and change and how after we graduate from college, most of us will be applying to jobs that currently don’t exist, and how the world is changing so quickly that many of the things he talked about in his presentation will be outdated a few years from now.

“Some data that was produced by us shows that seven years from now, most of you will be applying to jobs that don't exist today,” shared Mr. Hadad-Zervos. “So what advice can I give you in that situation? Focus on how you learn, because you are going to have it easier, but you're also going to have it harder than us because you're going to be learning how to learn, and you're going to be learning differently every day.”

The presentation ended with a discussion of how innovative spirit, free-thinking, and discipline will always be required, even if the world around us is rapidly changing. I found it interesting that online competitors have increased a lot more than those based geographically in the past 20 years and that innovation is crucial for development. I enjoyed talking to Mr. Hadad-Zervos and hearing about the many countries where he has worked and the different people he has interacted with. He was a very interesting and engaging speaker.
