Signing the Honor Code — A Valued Foxcroft Tradition

Over this past week, the entire Foxcroft community — teachers, students, and staff — actively participated in the building of community trust by signing the School’s Honor Code. Integrated into all aspects of Foxcroft life, the Honor Code and Honor Pledge keep our four core values — Respect, Integrity, Kindness, and Service — at the forefront of all we do.
Asked to talk a bit about “honor” during the Morning Meeting announcement of the week-long Honor Code signing, history teacher John Scharfenberg had this to say, "Foxcroft’s core values are Respect, Integrity, Service, and Kindness. If we can be true to these ideals, we can live an honorable life."

As Mr. Scharfenberg continued, he acknowledged both the importance and the challenges of modeling our values, something many people work on throughout their lives and that is essential in today’s world.  "We need to be unifying forces in our community and in our nation. We must treat everyone with respect and kindness. You have known this since an early age. This is the Golden Rule. Treat everyone as you would like to be treated. This is easy to understand, but hard to model. This is our challenge. … We need to understand our common interest so that we can advocate for what binds us and not focus on what separates us."

The signed Honor Code and Honor Pledge will be framed and hung in Schoolhouse as a reminder of each community member’s personal commitment to living and learning with honor at Foxcroft. Framed pledges also hang in classrooms and offices across campus, and students regularly write and sign the pledge on their academic assignments.

Many thanks to all members of the Honor Council — Betsy A. ’21, Claire H. ’21, London H. ’23, Catherine J. ’22, Isabelle M. ’23, Lilia S. ’22, Ella S. ’22, Anne Mueller, John Scharfenberg, Rebecca Wise, and Peachie Robinson — as well as Student Head of School Moni C-P. ’21, Student Vice Head Bianca M. ’21, Head of School Cathy McGehee, and Interim Dean of Students Stephanie Young ’00, for helping everyone start the school year with the utmost integrity.
