Former Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James Headlines Foxcroft’s Schoolwide Leadership Day

Second 2020-21 Goodyear Fellow to address Foxcroft community Friday, September 11 at 11am via Zoom
Admission is free; space is limited — please RSVP to advancement@foxcroft.org

As only the second woman to lead a US military service, our next 2020-21 Alison Harrison Goodyear ’29 Fellow Deborah Lee James led the 660,000 men and women of the Air Force and managed a budget of $139 billion. That’s larger than the GDP of more than 120 countries! As Secretary, she grappled with challenges that included preparing men and women to fight terror in the Middle East and combatting sexual assault in the military.
James will be presenting to the entire Foxcroft community on leadership, sharing her personal and professional experiences, strategies for success, and the problem-solving techniques that helped her rise to the top of the US Armed Forces. Her leadership and stories about integrity and civic service also reinforce Foxcroft’s “Use Your Voice for Good: Civic Service and Social Action” theme for the year and are the perfect framework for our schoolwide Leadership Day. On this day, Foxcroft pauses to engage in a shared conversation about leadership and values. This year, it falls in our Honor Week during which Honor Council members present a refresher on policies in the Student and Parent Handbook as well as other activities to engage the community and help everyone start out the school year with the utmost integrity.

After her keynote, James will lead two sessions for student leaders. The Honor Council will focus on strategies for leading when your job is discipline and for helping people. Dorm and class leaders will benefit from a session on leading by example and inspiring people to be their best.

James is the author of Aim High, Chart Your Course, and Find Success, which offers insights on her approach to leadership and problem solving that can be used in any walk of life. She has a three-decade track record in national security and is a frequent national security contributor to MSNBC. She served in the US government for 20 years, including time on Capitol Hill as a professional staff member in the US House of Representatives and two tours at the Pentagon — the first as Assistant Secretary of Defense and later as the Secretary of the Air Force. Most notably, she was President of the Technical and Engineering Sector of SAIC, responsible for $2 billion in contract revenue and 8,700 employees. James serves on the boards of various organizations, including Textron, Unisys, the Penfed Foundation, and Lean In.

Please make plans to join us on Friday, September 11 at 11am via Zoom for Deborah Lee James’ Goodyear Fellow community presentation. Admission is free; space is limited. Please RSVP to advancement@foxcroft.org.
