International Week: Brings Cultures — and Culinary Treats — Together
Who knew that “European Food” would be such a hit? Last night's scrumptious dinner brought together a variety of cultures with a menu of sauerbraten with gingersnap gravy (Germany), sour red cabbage (Norway), potatoes (Ireland), pierogies (Poland), and macaroons (Italy, France, Syria, United States). And the girls enjoyed it so much, they asked Dining Hall chef Denise Bray to make the meal a regular part of the menu rotation.
Like that meal, Foxcroft brings together a variety of cultures, and that is exactly what the Global Cultures Club celebrates during International Week.
So far this week, we’ve been treated to a West African Feast that featured fried plantains and joloof rice made according to recipes supplied by Elikem K. ’21; and a Korean/Japanese night planned by sophomores Hako I. and Semin A., with bulgogi, jap chae, teriyaki chicken, and “sushi cake.” Each night Global Culture Club members and friends have been in the kitchen, working with a wonderfully supportive Meredith Godsey staff to make and serve the authentic food.

In addition, a macaroon-making marathon Saturday night and this afternoon’s Tres Leche-making gathering in Roomies have produced some special treats, and Wednesday’s seated lunch quiz offered a special challenge with goodie bags of international snacks at stake.
And the best is yet to come! The week culminates tomorrow evening with an all-school banquet, aka Hispanic Fiesta, at 6pm, followed by the Bazaar at 6:50pm, and Gala performances at 7:35pm. Introduced last year, the bazaar will fill the first floor of Schoolhouse with a variety of activities, including the popular Chopstick Challenge, a “How Spicy Can You Eat?” contest, a calligraphy competition, “Guess the Flavor Challenge,” international dance party, and more. Snacks from Korea, chopsticks from China, and a variety of jewelry, clothing, and gifts from our international students’ homelands will be on sale at the market, as well.
The Gala, presented in FoxHound Auditorium, will feature singing, dancing, and instrumental performances — including Catherine J. ’22 playing the Erhu, a traditional Chinese instrument which, Catherine says, “is famous because it only has two strings, but it can play many songs.” Club Head Brianna M. has been organizing the production and Co-Heads Bianca M. ’21and Semin A. ’21 will be our emcees. Families are welcome to attend.
