Hounds Keep the Cup in Latest Renewal of Fox/Hound Tradition

Foxes fall, 43-18, in Big Game

With four starters from the varsity team that just won Foxcroft's first basketball championship in the Hounds lineup, everyone knew that the Foxes had a tough assignment this year in Fox/Hound Big Game. Most expected a one-sided affair -- and they were right, as far as the score is concerned: The Hounds kept the Cup Saturday afternoon with a 43-18 victory.

When it comes to heart, effort and sportsmanship, though, it was a very close match. The valiant Foxes, who had only three players with any varsity experience, battled to the very end with everything they had. And when it was all over, both teams stood tall as they cheered and sang and celebrated the true meaning of the day, "Friends through to the end."

The Hounds may have dominated the game, but at halftime it was all Foxes as Jacy Edelman and Alison Firestone Robitaille, both members of the Class of 1995 and local Foxes, were inducted into the Foxcroft School Sports Hall of Fame.
The Hounds had too much speed and experience for the Foxes and jumped to an 8-2 lead in the first quarter. Junior Alex, Delaney Athletic Conference Player of the Year, poured in 19 points, more than the entire Fox team. Point guard Pipsy, the Big Team Captain, scored nine points while freshman Mia M. had nine points and did a strong job rebounding. Two more varsity players -- Emma '15 (the fourth starter) and Marley B. '17 -- and Marina S. '16 and Hound Team Captain DeeDee Q. '15, rounded out the squad.

The Foxes were led by Big Team captain Kat F. ’16, who scored eight points, and fellow varsity player Serena H. '16, with six. Junior Ji Min was the only other varsity player on a squad that included Fox Captain Meredith D., senior Isabel M. and freshmen Pia S. and Robin P.

Alex sparked the Hounds to an 8-2 lead in the first quarter and she and Pipsy helped build the lead to a commanding 19-5 advantage at the half. The Foxes never quit hustling, though, scoring 13 points in the second half.

The game concluded a fun-filled weekend that included:
  • a boisterous Morning Meeting in FoxHound Friday,
  • The Foxes' 6-4 triumph over the Puppies in Little Game;
  • A Hound triumph, 20-2, in Middle Game;
  • a special visit by Freddy the Fox, courtesy of Head of School Cathy McGehee and the Lions Club;
  • and -- of course -- a whole lot of singing!
