Patia '16 Selected to NASA's VASTS Program

Patia F. '16 has been selected to participate in the Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars (VASTS) program, the Middleburg, VA, girls’ boarding and day school announced Monday.

Patia was selected by a panel based on her outstanding academic record, essay composition, and letter of recommendation. The VASTS program is an interactive online science, technology, engineering, and mathematics learning experience that could earn her several college credits and an all-expenses-paid trip to attend a summer academy at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA.
Beginning in December, Patia and her fellow VASTS scholars must complete eight web-based modules in NASA-related research. Using only the material presented, they develop solutions to real-world questions, participate in discussions on current space-related topics with other Scholars and NASA scientists and engineers, and hone their technical writing skills. Scholars who perform well are selected for the week-long Summer Academy, where they will work with other scholars to design a manned aerospace mission to Mars. At the end of the week, they present details of their mission to NASA scientists, engineers, and aerospace industry representatives during a Mission Design Review Panel. Scholars also will tour different facilities and labs that are typically not accessible to the public to view projects and technologies that currently support space exploration programs.

Patia participated in a similar program for younger students last year called the Virginia Space Coast Scholars program. Using online learning modules, she completed assignments, wrote papers, and took quizzes -- and was selected to go to the Virginia Space Coast Academy at Wallops Island in VA.
