Foxcroft Prevails at Highland

Lew Burridge
SINGLES:

Position 1: Annie M. vs B. Gibson     Results: 8-5
Despite not feeling 100%, Annie started out slow against a decent opponent from Highland who had steady strokes and well placed shots.  Annie found a weakness in her opponent’s backhand and when she pressured her there, her opponent typically missed or returned a short high bouncing ball that Annie could easily put away.  She did commit a relatively high (for Annie) percentage of unforced errors on those easy shots, usually hitting too hard, but to her credit she realized this and adjusted her game to compensate for it.  Once Annie settled down, and got the measure of her opponent (took a few games), she had no problem controlling the points and frustrating her opponent to win the match.

Position 2: Carrie C. vs E. Gioia     Results: 2-8
Carrie kept her great attitude and sportsmanship qualities high while playing an extremely frustrating opponent who merely hit everything back in the form of high bouncing “moonballs”.  She never lost her level composure, and had several good serves and volleys, but her opponent was just barely good enough to lob over her or bounce one deep into the open court.  Carrie’s first serves were a very effective weapon, but were not consistent enough overall to carry the whole match for her.  We will be working on tactics to use against the “moonball”, so Carrie if can take advantage of that, as well as work on her 1st serve consistency, she will definitely fare better against similar (and somewhat common) players in the future.

Position 3: Marina S. vs L. VanDeWelerResults: 8-0
Marina played well in her first singles match since coming back to the team.  As the score indicates, she played like the Marina we all know and love!  Using precise strokes to move her opponent around, opening up the court for crisp winners, her opponent was no match for Marina’s skills on the court.  It is indeed great to have her with us going forward!

Position 4:  Linda Y. vs A. WIlls     Results: 8-3
Linda played a well rounded match serving fairly well, and hitting the ball even better.  She moved to the high bouncing returns of her opponent, surprising her with sharp shots down the line from cross court returns.  It took the first few games to get really warmed up and get the measure of her opponent, but once she did there was no looking back!

Position 5: Isabel S. vs S. Becker     Results: 8-3
Isabel continued her winning streak in Foxcroft varsity tennis, where she like Linda, took a few games to get in tune and size up her opponent in the windy conditions.  But once that was accomplished, she employed near surgical precision to take apart her opponent’s game point by point to go on and win the match.

Exhibition 1: Amy Z. vs (not recorded)     Results: Won

DOUBLES:

Position 1: Annie M./Marina S. vs Gibson/Gioia     Results: 8-0
There was a lot of laughter coming from this court!  It was the laughter of comradery and happiness, and it was uplifting to watch these two very fine players and great friends playing tennis together again.  They were just enjoying it too much to even think about losing!  A&M are a very strong combination in any situation, and had no problems at all in this match.

Position 2: Carrie C./Linda Y. vs VanDeWeler/Wills     Results: 5-8
Carrie and Linda faced #3 and #4 from the singles line up, and gave them a good run for it.  Having not played together in a match before, it took a bit longer for them to coalesce as a unit.  It was a good experience to play with a relatively unknown partner, because that can happen any time in a match situation for a variety of reasons.  Carrie and Linda rose to that challenge, but towards the end both teams seemed to run out of time as the rain started to fall - and they just rushed to finish out the match (understandably).

Exhibition 1: Gaby P./Allie G. vs (not recorded)     Results: Won Big

SUMMARY:

We welcomed back Marina to full play this week (Yay!), and everyone looked fabulous in their pink breast cancer awareness t-shirts!  Thank you to the Parents Athletic Association! (see the photos)  As a team we are getting used to the processes of assessing our opponents play and formulating a solid plan to defeat it, while having the skills and stroke options to be more flexible than our opponents by adjusting to conditions and styles of play on the fly.  This is a great sign that the team is coalescing into a combined force that will carry us well into the rest of the season.  The hard work that the girls put in during practice and all the wonderful support we get from the Foxcroft community is most appreciated, and really shows up in the fine tennis play on match day!

The highlight of the day was Gaby’s and Allie’s doubles exhibition match.  Gaby just played an exemplary net game, forcing herself up to the net and just blasting crisp volley winners!  We were all totally impressed with Allie’s work to set up her partner for winners and Gaby’s can do attitude and tenacious play!  She made our day with constant shouts of “Go Gaby” heard echoing constantly throughout their match.
