We're all on a . . . WINTERMISSION!

Foxcroft's new mid-winter alternative learning term, Wintermission, began Monday (Feb. 13). During this week, regular academic courses are suspended so that students and faculty can explore learning in different ways. An adaptation of the Interim program from previous years, Wintermission allows students to take one or two intensive courses that examine a subject in great depth, or provide opportunities for off-campus travel and service. Courses range from the chemistry of cooking, journalism, and sports psychology to archiving Foxcroft's history, studying dreams, and making a movie in five days.

Many classes will extend beyond the classroom, taking students to big cities like Washington, DC, and New York, or distant countries like Honduras. Students taking "Would the Real American Indian Please Stand Up" class headed to the National Museum of the American Indian in DC on Monday, "Teacher, Teacher Students"  have begun their assistant teaching at a local elemenatary school and the "How to Become a Zuckerberg" class already spend two days in Cary, NC, to attend the SAS (Statistical Analysis System) High School Programming Day.

To follow Wintermission all week, check out the Wintermission blog and the Honduras trip on our Where's Foxcroft travel blog. For more information on thef course being offered, read on.
Dolphins, Diving, and Good Deeds: Seeking to truly expand their perspective of the world, a group of 23 students and three chaperones left for Roatan, Honduras, early Saturday for a week of diving, photography, and community service. The trip, led by faculty members Courtney Schultz, Gary Cox, and Archer Davis, will give girls the opportunity to get their Open Water Scuba Certification as they dive with dolphins, explore an amazing ecosystem, and help teachers and students at the Roatan Bilingual School.

Lights! Camera! Action! A Film in Five Days: Experience the excitement and master the technique to plan, shoot, edit, and screen your own films. We will form our own production crew in order to produce a film that will debut in Fox/Hound Auditorium on Friday, February 17th. We will brainstorm, script, storyboard, shoot, edit, soundtrack, and deliver a short film in just five days. Producers, directors, artists, writers, actors, musicians — we need every brand of creativity to make a successful film. We will learn the basics of story structure, script writing, visual composition, acting for the small screen, video editing, and film scoring. Start your film career now. Get ready for your close-up and join the fun!

Should I Eat That Cow? Should I Wear That Fur? Real World Ethical Decision Making: We will take a look at the field of applied ethics and discuss what is involved in making an ethical decision. Why do different human beings come up with contrasting results? We will visit some local sites to get an up-close view of the specifics (and often the faces) of each ethical dilemma. These destinations may include a farm that raises animals for consumption, a correctional facility to evaluate the justice system and the death penalty, or a clothing store to examine the varied furs available. For each dilemma, we will first examine the issue, make the trip, and then have a discussion when we return. Participants will record their responses to each dilemma and the decisions that we make.
