Students Present $4,500 Check to Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation

Foxcroft School students presented an oversized check for $4,500 representing the funds raised at the School’s Fifth Annual Think Pink Basketball Tournament in January to Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation Board members Rebecca Hoecker and Stephanie Knapp Friday morning at an all-school meeting in Currier Library.

Since 2007, Foxcroft has raised more than $50,000 for the Foundation, which supports early detection and treatment of this insidious disease with grants to local medical institutions for effective screening systems and direct assistance to women, and by educating the public about breast cancer. It also funs research to eliminate the disease.
Foxcroft has been one of the Foundation’s best supporters since the Cherry Blossom Walk, Run and Pooch Prance began, as an intimate local affair called “Nanette’s Walk” in 2007. Always the largest contingent at the event, Foxcroft has hosted it on campus the past two years. The student-run Athletic Association, in conjunction with the Athletic Department, has organized the Think Pink Tournament since Foxcroft's three-gym Athletic/Student Center opened in 2010, and students have put together bake sales, pink shoelace sales and other fundraiseers over the years.

In addition, Head of School Catherine S. McGehee and two students, senior Lilly and junior Mary Park, serve on the CBBCF Board of Directors, which holds various meetings and its annual Cherry Blossom Champions Award Dinner on campus. The Foxcroft student body was included in the first class of Champions three years ago.

In January, 13 basketball teams from seven school played 20 games over six hours at the fifth Think Pink Tournament. Organized by Athletic Director Michelle Woodruff and the student-run Athletic Association, the tournament is an all-school effort as students and faculty run food concessions, sell T-shirts, serve as timers, scorekeepers, runners and referees while a spirited student body, and hundreds of spectators combined to create a terrific day.

"Giving back is an integral part of a Foxcroft education and a natural part of what our girls do,” said Woodruff. “I’m very proud of their hard work and enthusiasm for this tournament.”

And the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation is grateful, too.
