Pinkapalooza, a Special Guest Speaker and Plenty of Pink

Foxcroft hosts the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Walk, Run and Pooch Prance – aka Nanette’s Walk – once again, on Sunday, October 11. This year, though, all are invited to get ready for the big day by putting on pink and coming to the first “Pinkapalooza” the day before (Saturday, October 10).

Organized by the Athletic Association in coordination with Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation Board members Mary Park D. '17 and Jessie H. '16, Pinkapalooza will be a spirit-filled day featuring interscholastic athletic competition, a massive tailgate and a lot of pink. Continue reading for details and join us if you can.

We hope to see you at the walk as well. Register in advance as an individual or with the Foxcroft Parents' Association team or on the day-of at the Athletics/Student Center beginning at 11:30am. The walk and 5K race starts at 1pm.
Nanette's granddaughter and Foxcroft freshman Holland D. will be among the throngs participating as virtually the entire student body and many faculty and staff join with area residents for the Middleburg incarnation of the Foundation's major fundraiser (a simultaneous event is held in Ashburn).

Cross-country coach Matt Mohler will hold a 5K fun run, complete with racing bibs, electronic scoring and prizes, and a pleasant three-mile walk has been mapped out for those looking for a more leisurely experience. Plenty of pets, too, dressed in their pink best, will be on hand to vie for Best Dressed Dog.

Foxcroft students will offer face painting and a bake sale to support the fight against cancer. Also down at McConnell Stables, the Athletic Association will run a concession stand and riders will be selling "Pink is for Pony" goodies, to benefit the CBBCF. Fundraising continues throughout the school year, most notably with the Think Pink Basketball Tournament in January.

A special speaker will visit during Morning Meeting on the Friday before the walk. Caitlin Miles, a doctoral student and sister of science teacher Meghen Tuttle, PhD, will share her experience of being diagnosed with and treated for a rare form of breast cancer at the age of 24 -- after discovering a lump during a regular breast self-exam. Her story should engage students who may think that breast cancer affects only older women.

On Saturday, Pinkapalooza begins at 10am with Varsity and JV Field Hockey, JV Volleyball and Varsity Tennis in action against teams from St. James (2), Wakefield, and Charlottesville, respectively. At 11am, Varsity Volleyball hosts Wakefield. Athletes will be wearing pink warmups bought by the Parents’ Association last year and pink socks (available at the PX!) and the Athletic Association has some special fun planned.

The tailgate following the games will feature not only a hearty repast but a competition among the four grades for Best Tailgate, based on the theme and decorations they create. Many thanks, in advance, to the Parents’ Association, especially PA Athletic Volunteers Corrine Steyn and Jennifer Grace, for all the help and support.

The CBBCF works to "detect, treat, educate and eliminate" breast cancer in Fauquier and Loudoun counties. Since 2007, it has granted almost $700,000 to local organizations that help women with breast cancer and educate others about the disease. The all-volunteer non-profit also annually recognizes outstanding individuals and organizations fighting breast cancer with the Cherry Blossom Champion Award.

Foxcroft, which has has raised thousands of dollars for the Foundation, received one of the inaugural Cherry Blossom Champion Awards and now has two permanent seats on its board for Foxcroft girls, who sit on several Board committees along with participating in in full board meetings. In June, Mary Park, who is serving her second year, was elected Secretary of the Board! Head of School Cathy McGehee is also on the board.
