Mr. Cox's photo is featured on the Gold Cup invite

The Foxcroft community has long enjoyed the fine photography of Visual Arts teacher Gary Cox. It has graced the cover of our magazine and other School publications, both print and electronic. This fall, when organizers mailed 55,000 brochures inviting folks to October's International Gold Cup Races, a much wider audience had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Cox's work. The cover of the brochure features a photograph he took at the event several falls ago.

"We liked the red bushes and composition," says Diane Jones, Executive Director of the Gold Cup. "It's a very nice photograph." Mr. Cox's picture is also being used on posters, programs and many other Gold Cup materials.

It isn't easy to get a picture like that. “As challenging as riding is for the rider," says Mr. Cox, "I have found trying to anticipate that magical moment in time equally challenging as a photographer.”
Of course, Mr. Cox has had plenty of opportunity to hone his equestrian photography over the years. He shoots many Foxcroft events, from Tri-State Equitation League and Fox/Hound competitions to the Whippers-In exhibition held each spring. He's also a regular at other sports events, most theatrical productions, Reunions and just about any other major event that takes place on campus. A lifelong learner as well as a terrific teacher, Mr. Cox is now beginning to explore underwater photography, in large part because he earned his SCUBA certification over the summer. "This could get expensive," he smiles.

Since joining the Foxcroft faculty in 1999, Mr. Cox has taught the spectrum of art courses including Painting, Introduction to the Arts, Independent Studio Art and his specialties, Ceramics and Photography.

His colleague, Fine Arts Department chair Robyn Yovanovich, got him started taking photos at the Gold Cup. Mrs. Yovanovich has done color commentary for ESPN-TV at both the International and Virginia Gold Cup events for a number of years and suggested he check it out.

Some 35,000 spectators are expected to gather at Great Meadow near The Plains, VA, on October 18th to celebrate the 71st running of the International Gold Cup Races. This day includes seven nationally-sanctioned races, Terrier and Pony Races and a classic car display. For more information, go to the Gold Cup website,
