Lacrosse Opens Foxcroft’s Spring Sports Season Thursday

What can the Foxcroft lacrosse team possibly do for an encore?  How do you top a perfect 17-0 season that culminated in a Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) state championship?

Well, this year’s team has the personnel to attempt a repeat -- and that's what they'll be striving to do.After two game cancellations due to flooded fields, the team will begin its quest for another state title Tuesday when it hosts Fredericksburg Academy in its season opener.

Varsity soccer opens Monday, March 30, with a home game against Fredericksburg Christian School and Softball's debut comes Tuesday, March 31 against Seton School in Manassas.
Lacrosse was supposed to have opened its campaign Friday, March 20 with a game in Charlottesville against Virginia Episcopal, but the match was cancelled because the field where the game was supposed to be played was under water. The season's start was again postponed Thursday, March 26 when John Paul the Great, projected host of both varsity and jv games, also found its field soaked and unplayable.  No matter; Foxcroft is ready whenever the season starts!

With only three seniors graduated from the 2014 team, this year’s version is full of experience, starting with senior co-captains Cortney C., Tori W. and Emma R.
Emma, a two-time Player of the Year in the Delaney Athletic Conference and an All-State First Team selection last year, is in her fourth season as a starter and already holds the school record for most assists in a season (45) and most points in a season (123).

Also returning is junior midfielder Alex G., who set a school record last year with 92 goals and was named Player of the Year in the state tournament; All-State junior midfielder Pipsy S., who tallied 42 goals and added 14 assists; and junior attack Malan J. (22 goals, 25 assists).

New additions to the team are junior midfielder Winnie M., freshman defender Mia M. and freshman midfielder Pia S.

While the team has high aspirations for making the state tournament for the fourth consecutive year, the players and coaches know success will come only with hard work and a strong practice ethic.

“I am already very impressed with the cohesive mentality and the focus on being a team,” says Coach Patrick Finn. “This will serve us well as the season progresses.”

The Varsity Soccer Team is coached by Esther Sanchez. She has most of the team returning from last year, including All-DAC defender and team Most Valuable Player Kat W. ’15 and two of the team’s leading scorers, Fabiana B. ’17 and Isabel M. ’15. Freshman Rachel B. is the only newcomer to the team.

Softball, on the other hand, is loaded with new players. Ten of the team’s 16-player roster, including five freshmen, are new to the team and Coaches Fred McMane and Lew Burridge expect there will be a lot of growing pains. As many as six new players may end up in the starting lineup for the season opener next Tuesday.

The new members of the team include senior Charlotte S.; juniors Laney M., Eri M., and Rebecca V.; sophomore Emily D.; and freshmen Savannah H., Cici J., Abby J., Daniela O. and Renee Xie.

Seniors Carrie C. and Lilly P. are the captains of this year’s squad. Both have been members of the team for four years.
