Lacrosse Advances to Final Four of State Tourney with 12-10 win

Out of sync in the first half and beaten to the ball regularly by its opponent, Varsity Lacrosse picked up its game in the second half Tuesday and rallied to defeat Trinity Christian, 12-10, and advance to the semifinals of the VISAA Division II state tournament.

Foxcroft, seeded second in the tournament, will meet Delaney Athletic Conference rival Highland, the third-ranked team that defeated Fredericksburg Academy 10-8 in its first-round game, in a semifinal match. That game will be held at 11 a.m. Friday on Collegiate School's Robins Campus in Richmond. Both the semifinal and the championship game, scheduled for 11 am Saturday, will be live-streamed on VISAA.TV

Foxcroft defeated Trinity Christian, 20-14, during the regular season but had trouble Tuesday getting untracked against the Fairfax school, which was seeded seventh in the state tournament. Foxcroft started off well, scoring the first three goals to take a 3-0 lead, but Trinity scored five consecutive goals and went on to grab a 7-5 lead at intermission.

At the start of the second half, though, Foxcroft was a completely different team.

“We made some defensive adjustments at halftime and prepared to pressure them a little as well as to stop their runs to goal from midfield,” Coach Patrick Finn said. “We also made it clearto our players that they were in a tough game and had to get better at draws and ground balls if they wanted to continue their season.”

At the start of the second half Alex G. ’16, who scored three goals in the game, won the draw and gained possession of the ball. Using her blazing speed, she broke to the net and scored unassisted – just as she had done at the start of the game -- to cut the deficit to one goal. Foxcroft tied the score minutes later on a goal by Caroline F. ’13 and momentum had shifted to the home team.

Even though Trinity Christian scored the next two goals to take 9-7 lead, Foxcroft came roaring back on goals by Pipsy ’16 and O.J. ’13 to tie the score again. Trinity Christian went ahead, 10-9, at the 15:58 mark but that would be its last goal as the home team knuckled down and held TC scoreless the rest of the way.

Emma ’15, the DAC Player of the Year, tied the score 30 seconds later and at 12:21 Caroline got her third goal of the game to give Foxcroft the lead. Alex scored again with 8:28 left and Foxcroft held the ball for the last six minutes to preserve the victory.

“They had some potent shooters and dodgers and we didn’t want them getting the ball back, simple as that,” said Coach Finn in explaining Foxcroft’s ball control tactics late in the game. “A two-goal lead is very tiny … a goal, lost draw and goal  -- and you’re tied easily. That being said, it’s very hard to keep the ball that long and our girls did a great job possessing and not making mistakes.”

It was the last home game for Foxcroft’s seniors and the three All-DAC seniors – Caroline, Carter and OJ -- all played a strong game. Caroline had three goals, OJ notched two and Carter had three draw controls. OJ and Caroline each had two ground balls.
