Foxcroft Draws Covenant in First Round of VISAA Division II State Lacrosse Tournament

Foxcroft begins its quest for a third consecutive VISAA Division II state lacrosse championship Tuesday when it plays host to Covenant School (Charlottesville) in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Foxcroft (11-3), which lost to Highland in the Delaney Athletic Conference championship game last Friday, is the No. 2 seed in the tournament, which will culminate with semifinals and final competition in Richmond later this week. Highland (15-0), which beat Foxcroft twice this season, is the No. 1 seed.

Covenant (3-11) is the No. 7 seed and met Foxcroft in a scrimmage earlier this spring. “We know them a little,” Foxcroft Coach Patrick Finn said.

Despite the loss to Highland, Coach Finn said the mental outlook of the team is pretty good. “We know we have to make some adjustments to beat Highland but we are just focusing on tomorrow right now,” he said. “It's the typical 'take one game at a time' scenario.

"Our goal is to get back to the finals but we know we have work to do to get there. Our team needs to all play at their best this week, that is for sure.”

Foxcroft was not at its best against Highland in the DAC final, losing 11-4 as its offense continually faltered and seemed out of sync. Senior Pipsy S., the team’s leading scorer, touched the ball only twice in the entire game. Both Finn and his co-coach, Michelle Woodruff, said the team would make some offensive adjustments but Coach Finn declined to say what those adjustments would be.

Foxcroft continues to play without senior Alex G., who was named Player of the Year in the last two state championships. She suffered a torn meniscus five games into the season and has not played since. Alex, who will play for the University of Virginia next year, is the career goal-scoring record holder for Foxcroft and had 23 goals at the time of her injury.

With Alex out, though, the team has featured a more balanced attack. Steyn leads the team with 36 goals but there are six other players who have scored in double figures, including five with 20 or more goals.
