Foxcroft Athletes Shine in State Competition

How do you compare against the best? That’s what every high school athlete wants to know and Foxcroft girls came away from the state tournaments very proud of their accomplishments.

It wasn’t quite as intoxicating an experience as a year ago when field hockey reached the VISAA Division II final, tennis reached the Division II semifinals and Amy E. ’14 finished fourth in the state cross-country championships. But it was nevertheless a solid achievement that reinforces the notion that Foxcroft is a force to be reckoned with in the athletic arena.
Varsity Field Hockey, which finished the regular season ranked No. 5 in Virginia, won a dramatic quarter-final match with Walsingham Academy in Williamsburg before dropping a 4-2 semifinal match to No. 1 seed North Cross over the weekend. With the score tied at 2-2 after regulation and a 10-minute overtime period last Tuesday, the quarterfinal went to a penalty stroke shootout and junior Pipsy S. delivered a game-winning goal for Foxcroft.

Pipsy, an All-Delaney Athletic Conference First Team selection, also scored twice in the semifinal games Saturday at the National Training Center. Top-ranked North Cross beat Foxcroft, 4-2, in a game that Foxcroft showed plenty of heart, rallying from a 4-0 deficit and even scoring its second goal with just two minutes remaining.

Head Coach and Athletic Director Michelle Woodruff can look ahead to next year with great optimism as all four of the team’s First-Team All-DAC selections – Pipsy, Lindsay W. ’17, Allison B. ’17 and leading scorer Laney M. ’16 -- will return. Serena H. ’16, the team’s second leading scorer and an All-DAC Honorable Mention, will also be back, along with rookie netminders Elle L. '17 and Jessie H. '16, who almost made folks forget about the much-decorated goaltender Alicia H., who graduated in May.

For the second year in a row, Foxcroft produced an All-State selection in Cross Country as junior Alex G. finished 17th (the top 20 runners automatically received All-State honors.). Alex led a Foxcroft team that managed a 13th-place finish among 35 teams. Juniors Lexie W. (34th) and junior Patia F. (89th) also had good runs. Coach Matt Mohler expects to field a very strong team next year as the entire squad returns.

The tennis team, which struggled all year with injuries and team absences, qualified for the state tournament for the third year in a row but ran into a powerhouse in the first round. No. 2 ranked Nansemond Academy dominated as Foxcroft did not win a match. According to Coach Susan Erba, though, our athletes were not that far behind in terms of ability.

“There is nothing in our girls’ respective games that would prevent them from playing and beating a team like this in the future,” Erba said. “The girls have the skills and ability, they just need to be more consistent and match hardened by also playing more opponents of a skill level like Nansemond. We really were not that far off the pace with this team and that level of play is very much within our grasp.”
