Cherry Blossom Walk, Run and Pooch Prance Comes to Foxcroft Again!

In 2007 when the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation held its first fundraising event -- "Nanette's Walk" -- in Middleburg, Foxcroft girls got up at the crack of dawn on a Saturday morning to support the cause. Since then, the enthusiastic support of students from the local girls boarding and day school has been a cornerstone of the annual event and the two organizations have developed a strong relationship.

That relationship, and the critical need to support breast cancer victims, health institutions that screen for and treat it, and scientists who continue the search for a cure, will be front and center again Sunday (Sept.28) when what has become the "Cherry Blossom Walk, Run and Pooch Prance for Breast Cancer" is held on Foxcroft's campus for the second year in a row.

Registration, at the Athletics/Student Center, begins at 11:30 am with the walk, and a timed, competitive 5-K race, going off at 1pm. Once again Foxcroft's entire student body and many faculty and staff will lead the charge. Several other boarding schools, invited by Foxcroft students, will also participate, along with a Parents Association Team. Local groups representing Trinity Church Upperville, Blue Ridge Hospice, and others will also take part.

Foxcroft's buildup to Sunday's Cherry Blossom Walk, Run, and Pooch Prance began Thursday with the Varsity Volleyball Team's "Dig Pink" game and continued Friday when representatives of the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation spoke at an all-school meeting and students and faculty donned pink. Fundraising continues throughout the school year with a Pink Pony Bake Sale at next week's Interscholastic Equestrian Association Horse Show at McConnell Stables, sales of pink shoelaces, the Think Pink Basketball Tournament in January and more.

The CBBCF is a local organization that works to "detect, treat, educate and eliminate" breast cancer in Fauquier and Loudoun counties. Since 2007, Foxcroft has raised more than $35,000 for the Foundation, which last year created two seats on its board especially for Foxcroft girls. Lilly P. '15 and Madeline T. '14, along with Associate Head of School Sheila McKibbin, last year served on the Education and Grants committees and participated, in full meetings. This year, Lilly will be joined by sophomore Mary Park D., in place of the graduated Maddie. Read a story about in the Middleburg Life about this rare arrangement here
