Charlotte S. ‘16 Places 2nd in Division at Cherry Blossom 10-Miler!

While Washington, DC, has recently drawn a number of visitors to view the beautiful blooms along the Tidal Basin, an intrepid group of 16 students and two adult chaperone/runners departed at dawn on a cold Sunday morning (April 3) for another cherry blossom-related adventure -- the 44th annual Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run -- the results of which are just as impressive as the blooms!

With a time of 1:13:41, Charlotte S. '16 placed second in her division (Females 19 & under) and 226th among all 9,698 women – in the top 2.3 percent of the entire female field!

As a division top-three finalist, Charlotte secured a guaranteed entry into the 2017 race and will start in the first wave after the “elite” or sponsored runners, along with the other 2016 first-, second- and third-place runners from every division.
Alex G. '16 also had an impressive race, finishing with a time of 1:16:38. Both she and Charlotte had splits of under eight minutes per mile.

Among the other student runners were Cherry Blossom 10-Miler veterans Lexie W. ‘16 and Brittany H. '17, and first-time competitors seniors Sophia D., Carli M. and Lucy M.; juniors Jacqueline D., Maddy G. and Olivia K.; sophomores Melanie F., Elle R. and Pia S. and freshman Grace C. Two girls, seniors Patia F. and Victoria Z., were slated to run but could not due to illness. All those who did begin the race on Sunday finished it -- quite the feat considering the distance they ran and the cold and windy conditions!

Math and Science teacher Matt Mohler and Read McGehee, Head of School Cathy McGehee’s husband, chaperoned and ran the race as well. Race managers Zoey X. '18 and Jasmine M. '16 were supportive and helpful members of the team on race day.

“There was a lot of excitement in the air,” reflected Mr. Mohler. “Ten miles sounds so daunting, but when you get down there it’s so festive. We were all excited.”

Dubbed the “runner’s rite of spring,” participating in the Cherry Blossom 10-miler has become a tradition at Foxcroft. With Mr. Mohler’s organization, training and support, girls have competed in both the spring race and the fall Army 10-Miler for several years. Congratulations to all this year’s runners!
