Celebrating Diversity Together: Fun Movie Night with Madeira School

by Natalie H. '16

On Friday, January 8, Foxcroft’s diversity club, We The People, was invited by the Black Student Union at The Madeira School to watch The Wiz Live! That evening, nearly 30 girls who share a passion for diversity and inclusion came together in a dorm lounge to view the production that aired on television last month starring such modern-day talents as Queen Latifah, Ne-Yo, Uzo Aduba, and more!

Featuring an entirely African-American cast, The Wiz Live reimagines the classic Wizard of Oz in an urban setting. It first debuted as a live stage musical, The Wiz: The Super Soul Musical Wonderful Wizard of Oz, that was later portrayed through film starring Diana Ross and the multi-talented artist Michael Jackson.
Together with the girls from Madeira, we shared many laughs and good snacks, and formed bonds while watching The Wiz Live. Whether she had grown up watching The Wiz or Friday night was her first time seeing it, each girl left with a smile on her face. After the movie, several informal conversation groups formed, with girls expressing how much fun they had, but also sharing the similarities and differences between our all-girls high school experiences.

This movie night was hopefully a start to a long lasting relationship between Foxcroft and Madeira! We hope to have another gathering soon, but next time on roller skates!
