Cathy McGehee profiled, Foxcroft tabbed as a Top High School by Virginia Living

Head of School Catherine S. McGehee is profiled and Foxcroft School’s state champion lacrosse team is highlighted in the special state of education section of Virginia Living magazine’s October issue, which hit newsstands this week.

It is the third consecutive year that Foxcroft has been included in the “Top High Schools and Colleges” section. The half-page feature about McGehee, however, is a special honor indicative of the impact that made since being installed as Foxcroft’s 10th head of school a year ago. Only three other feature stories in the section focus on independent schools, and Foxcroft is included in one of those, a piece entitled "Centennial Club."
Calling her first year "exhilarating," McGehee talks about enjoying the boarding school life, which is new to her, the advantage of girls' schools and the "EPICS" program, which combines engineering and community service.

"The girls are so impressive," she says of Foxcroft students. "They enter as typical 14-year-old teens as freshmen and leave as confident women who have developed their own voice."

Being one of Virginia Living's top high schools is becoming an annual event for Foxcroft. Last year, its hands-on approach to co-curricular programs and in academic classes earned a place among the commonwealth’s top schools in the Science, Math and Technology category. In 2013, the boarding and day school for girls was honored in the capital improvements category and a feature about its unique Exceptional Proficiency Program was included.

Virginia Living’s special section, which debuted in 2013, celebrates excellence and innovation in Virginia’s high schools and colleges, recognizing extraordinary programs and development in six categories. Magazine editors conduct a thorough review of the programs and accomplishments of scores of public and independent high schools and colleges, and select those that are truly outstanding.
