An Encouraging Start

Varsity Basketball hoping to contend for division title

After splitting its first two games of the season the Foxcroft basketball team is confident it can contend
for the Delaney Athletic Conference Division II title.

The team showed enough in its first two games to warrant that optimism.
Much of the confidence was built by the team's play Dec. 10,despite a 32-28 loss to Wakefield at home. Wakefield, a DAC Division I team, was VISAA Division III state runners-up the last two seasons and has five seniors who were part of those celebration, playing this year.

Foxcroft, though, was not intimidated by Wakefield’s credentials. Foxcroft battled hard throughout the contest and was in the game right down to the wire. The team held Wakefield’s scoring star Arielle J. to only nine points after she had scored 20 or more points in three of the past four games.

Meanwhile, Foxcroft’s Kathleen “Kat” F. completely dominated Wakefield on the backboards. Kat had 14 points and 14 rebounds, giving Foxcroft its first double-double performance since February of 2013 when McKenna Andrews pulled off the feat. It was Kat’s second straight 14-rebound performance as she also controlled the boards in the team’s season-opening DAC Division II 35-22 home victory over Randolph-Macon Academy.

Junior Alex G. had a team-leading 12 points against R-MA and chipped in nine points against Wakefied.

“With a solid returning core from last year’s team, and the addition of some new players, we have added some quality teams to our conference schedule which will challenge the team to improve and give some great experience throughout the season,” Coach Patrick Finn said. “Wakefield, state finalists last year in a higher division, was an example of this. We played a fun and uptempo game and although we came up short, our girls gained valuable experience and competed well enough to win. The girls play hard, have a great attitude and are learning to compete at a higher level. They also have fun and work hard in practice.”

Foxcroft is coming off a season in which it posted an 11-3 record, the school’s best in over a decade, and reached the final of the DAC championship. Foxcroft lost that game, 28-24, to Fredericksburg Academy, but Foxcroft will not have to contend with FA for the division title this year as the school's team
has moved up to join Wakefield, Seton, Trinity, Highland and Fredericksburg Christian in Division I.

Besides R-MA, Foxcroft will contend with Quantico, Wakefield Country Day School, Tandem Friends and St. Michael in Division II. Foxcroft beat all of those teams last season and returns three starters – Alex, Kat and point guard Pipsy S.– from that team.

Rounding out the squad are senior captain Emma R.; juniors Serena H., Caroline M., Acacia N., JiMin Y. and Laney M.; sophomores Marley B. and Mary Park D.; and freshman Mia M. Caroline, Mia, Mary Park, JiMin and Laney are new to the varsity this year.
