A Truly International Community

One of the joys of Foxcroft is its diversity. Girls meet girls from other countries and cultures here that they would never meet at home. Our 30+ international students and their friends celebrated that last night at the International Bring a Friend Dinner hosted by the Office of Student Life (Thank you Ms. McKibbin and Ms. Coil!). Good food, great dancing, and fun and games at the pool and foosball tables highlighted the evening, which everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy.

The event was the third international happening of the week and just part of a larger international initiative this year. On Sunday, a dozen girls attended an international student pool party and picnic with boys from Georgetown Prep, and in Monday's Morning Meeting our new international student advisor and Academic English teacher Lisa Boulestreau and several students taught us a great lesson about cultural differences, even in some simple activities.
In addition to the International Club and Chinese Language and Culture Club, we have new French, Spanish, and Indian clubs this year. In the Dining Hall, we have weekly "Global" and French tables, plus Mr. Brown is presenting a special dinner featuring the cuisine of a different country once a month.

At Monday's Morning Meeting, Ms. Boulestreau and several students demonstrated the different ways that people use their hands to count to 10 in the U.S., France, China, Taiwan, and South Korea. Then she shared a funny story about her husband trying to order two dishes of ice cream in China using his fingers and almost ending up with seven servings! Look for variations on Old MacDonald and his farm animal sounds next!

At Wednesday's dinner in Roomies, scores of girls enjoyed good food, great dancing, and fun games at the pool and foosball tables. It was, it seems, the liveliest International Dinner in years with girls from a half dozen countries, their friends, and several faculty getting in on the action. Sunday's party with Georgetown Prep also featured dancing, along with spirited games of handball and Apples to Apples, and an all-American cookout of hot dogs and hamburgers at the lovely Linden, VA, home of GP International Coordinator Rosita Whitman. The cool weather kept all but one brave GP boy out of the pool but did not put a damper on the fun. We hope to reciprocate with an event on campus this spring.

The new "Global" and French lunch tables have both drawn good crowds. The first affords students for whom English is a second language a fun, semi-structured occasion to speak it with each other and with native speakers they invite to join them. The second is aimed mostly as a conversational opportunity for students of French, but several girls and teachers who do not take French have been known to join in. The first of the international buffets by Mr. Brown and his staff took place last week when we all enjoyed bratwurst and schnitzel at German night. A French-themed evening is next on the docket.

We hope you will encourage your daughter to take advantage of this unique opportunity to broaden her horizons -- by participating in any or all of the international activities, befriending girls who have different experiences to share, and perhaps even bringing one home for a weekend or short holiday.
