Envisioning a Space to Innovate

Recently, 18 Foxcroft students were given an opportunity to join the Space to Innovate Project, an initiative to create a fully functional makerspace at the School. With technology and innovative materials that are not available to the students normally in the classroom, a makerspace at Foxcroft would introduce students to a variety of industrial materials, as well as attract leaders in creative industries that will inspire students to learn deeply on their own.
Recently, 18 Foxcroft students were given an opportunity to join the Space to Innovate Project, an initiative to create a fully functional makerspace at the School. With technology and innovative materials that are not available to the students normally in the classroom, a makerspace at Foxcroft would introduce students to a variety of industrial materials, as well as attract leaders in creative industries that will inspire students to learn deeply on their own.
The first task of the new team is to research other innovative spaces. On Tuesday, a group of four faculty members and seven students went to Creative Workplace Interiors & Technology in Richmond, VA, where we met with a group of innovators who discussed the importance of choosing the right technology and furniture for the makerspace. They toured us around their workspace, teaching us how furniture can be used to define a space, and encouraged us to decide how we wanted our space to feel.
We then went with the innovators from Creative Workplace Interiors to visit the University of Richmond, where we were able to see the technology applied to a classroom setting.
After having a very beneficial tour of different learning environments, our group split. While several of the team members returned to campus for sporting events, a few of us were able to stay in Richmond for a tour of Steward School. There, we were able to visit two different makerspaces. The first, located in the school library, was a small space set up for about ten students. It had a 3D printer, silhouette cameo cutter, sewing machine, and several cabinets overflowing with materials for all sorts of projects. After looking around, we walked across campus to the Bryan Innovation Lab, a huge building equipped with many different creative amenities.
We learned about many important parts of creating a makerspace, as well as what to avoid. Set with valuable knowledge that couldn’t have been found elsewhere, we returned to school, thankful for everything we had seen and learned that day.
