10 Works by Students Earn Prestigious Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

Eight Foxcroft students created ten outstanding works of art that were selected for special recognition in the 2024 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards regional competition.
Two works achieved Silver Key status in the photography and mixed media categories, respectively. Those artists were Rocky C. ’24, for a photo titled “Blinding Lights,” and Bea L. ’26, for a mixed media piece titled “Mercury.”

Avery S. ’25 and Bronte B. ’26 earned two Honorable Mentions each. Avery’s came in the photography and digital art categories, while both of Bronte’s were achieved in the drawing and illustration category. Additional Honorable Mentions were earned by Juliana R. ’24 and Chiara D. ’25 (photography), Zoe S. ’25 (digital art), and Lema S. ’24 (comic art).

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, established in 1923, are presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers in partnership with more than 100 visual arts and literary arts organizations across the country. It is the nation’s largest, longest-running, most prestigious visual and literary arts program, recognizing students' accomplishments in middle and high school.

Among the artistic luminaries who have served as judges are Langston Hughes, Robert Frost, Edwidge Danticat, David Sedaris, Nikki Giovanni, and Roz Chast. The list of past winners is equally impressive, with Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Sylvia Plath, Ken Burns — and Foxcroft Fine Arts teacher Karin Thorndike — among the honored.
