"Miss Penny" receives Lockhart Service Award!
Penny Alderman, Director of the Northcross Health Center at Foxcroft School, was presented the Jane Lockhart Service Award by Head of School Mary Louise Leipheimer Thursday (May 23) before a appreciative crowd of students, faculty, and families who jumped to their feet to give her a standing ovation at the School’s Awards Assembly in the Engelhard Gymnasium.
“Miss Penny” as she is known to legions of students, has ministered to thousands of girls with an “open heart, ready ear, and warm smile” for 24 years. She becomes the first recipient besides Lockhart to receive the award, which includes an honorarium.
“Whether she is educating the community about blood-borne pathogens and defibrillators, making ‘house calls’ to check on a ‘patient’ or hand deliver a flu shot, or creating a safe harbor in the Health Center,” said Leipheimer, “Miss Penny is ‘our guardian angel’—a direct quote from a member of the Class of 2012.”The Lockhart Award was established last year by Foxcroft parents and students who have been enriched by the dedication, commitment, and passion of the lifelong Middleburg resident who has worked at Foxcroft since 1966. It honors a staff or faculty member who demonstrates the kind of support and concern for students that Lockhart is known for.
“It recognizes that in a school where 'everything we do is curriculum,'” said Leipheimer, “an adult’s concern for, commitment to, and understanding of all students—the emphasis is on the ‘all’ — is paramount.”
A graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College with a BS in Nursing, Alderman grew up in Western Pennsylvania and worked in in several physicians’ office and two hospitals, including the Winchester (VCA) Medical Center, before coming to Foxcroft in 1989 to be a resident nurse. She became director of the Northcross Health Center in 2005. She lives on the Foxcroft campus with her husband Bill and has two grown sons, Jason and Todd.
