Stimulating opportunities for hands-on learning — for all ages!
Engaging the Community
Foxcroft's STEM program is tailored to our student's interests and learning styles. But did you know we also host events open to the community? Whether solving the mystery of who stole Suzie Foxcroft's identity at Expedition K2M: The STEM Summit or flying a drone for the first time during “Teachers Take Flight,” eager participants have benefitted from the expertise within our STEM Department and the partnerships we have formed with organizations such as K2M, Inc.

“By introducing girls to the exciting, challenging, and (yes!) fun side of STEM, we hope to help all girls reach their full potential, whether they decide to pursue STEM in the future or not.”
Hosted by Foxcroft's STEM and Admission Departments, “Jump Into Game Design” is an opportunity for middle school girls in the area to get a hands-on lesson in computer programming. With knowledgable STEM faculty leading the workshop and Foxcroft's own students offering help along the way, girls will program their own version of a classic computer game from start to finish. Learning a new skill on the computer has never been more fun!
Expedition K2M: The STEM Summit is a girls-only, hands-on STEM competition that brings middle and high school students to Foxcroft for a day of challenging problem solving. Hosted by Foxcroft's STEM Department and sponsored by K2M, Inc., a biomedical firm out of Leesburg, VA, the competition draws nearly 200 students annually from area schools.
Exciting things are happening in the STEM Department! "STEM Presents," a new speaker series established this year by Director of STEM Education Kristine Varney, will bring professionals in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math to Foxcroft, where they'll have the opportunity to share their expertise and real-world experience with our students. The first of these presentations took place last Thursday, October 4, when Nigel Mould delved into the physics, computer science, medical, and math applications inherent in the work of his company, Stack Care. Senior Grace C. reports on the event:
On October 4th, we welcomed our first STEM speaker, Mr. Nigel Mould (dad of Cecilia '22), to Foxcroft. In a short session during tutorial, students were able to engage in the world of physics and learn about the applications of motion sensors.
Foxcroft School’s ever-popular Expedition K2M: The STEM Summit was a grand success Saturday, especially for the hosts! For the first time in the seven-year history of the hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math competition especially for girls, Foxcroft teams swept the top three places in the high school division.
Saturday’s STEM competition will feature fun challenges, problem solving, and more!
When girls gather Saturday to embark on the seventh annual Expedition K2M: The STEM Summit, they will set off on a day filled with collaboration, calculations, deductive reasoning, and — above all else — STEM-centric fun!
Foxcroft School’s math and science teachers keep coming up with more creative ideas for attracting girls to STEM activities and the upcoming 2018 Expeditions K2M: The STEM Summit, is just the latest example.
On Saturday, February 24, when the seventh annual, hands-on event takes place, 40 teams of girls from middle and high school in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., will focus on a subject close to their hearts, animals — specifically, illegal poaching and animal conservation. In addition to bragging rights and trophies, the winning schools will receive symbolic animal adoptions in their names through the World Wildlife Federation.
