Foxcroft Observes MLK Jr. Day with Moving Program

“We the People” organizes presentation, procession, and banquet

Foxcroft's student-led diversity and inclusion club, We the People, led the community in a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday with a moving program and special banquet that reminded us all of the challenges and joys of living in a multicultural world, as well as our responsibility to it.
The program, held in the Audrey Bruce Currier Library, began with a glimpse of the struggles of the civil rights movement during the 1960s with a brief slide show and video. Junior Bella S., one of the We the People leaders, read an inspirational passage from Dr. King’s famous “Letter from the Birmingham City Jail,” followed by junior leader Courtney B.’s dramatic reading of “Theme for English B” by Langston Hughes.

Quotes from Dr. King, his wife Coretta Scott King, and others inspiring us to “keep moving forward” on the path to social justice for all were interspersed with personal “I Am” poems demonstrating the diverse backgrounds and influences that help form us, as well as the universal similarities that we share.

Students, faculty, and members of the Alumnae Council’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee held signs with words and simple phrases reflecting personal hopes and dreams for the future as they proceeded to the Dining Hall to enjoy a delicious Soul Food feast and carry on the conversation. Afterward, a small group of students and the alumnae in attendance gathered for coffee, cookies, and further discussion of their experiences and hopes for the future.
