Looking at the College Admission Process during the Junior Parent College Program

On Saturday, January 5, Foxcroft’s sophomores and juniors and their parents spent the day learning more about how the selective college process works. Featured speaker Dr. Bruce Chamberlin, Associate Dean of Admissions at Georgetown University, provided context through and anecdotes from his years of experience.
The program began with a welcome from Head of School Cathy McGehee, followed by an interactive Kahoot quiz that taught students and parents more about specific aspects of college admission. Director of College Counseling Barbara Conner then provided an overview of the Foxcroft college process. This approach includes getting to know students early in their time at Foxcroft, holding individual meetings, and participating in College Seminar sessions (weekly classes in the spring of junior year which cover a variety of college application topics). In addition, Foxcroft's testing plan encourages students to make the most of their rigorous academics and take advantage of Method Test Prep, which is provided by Foxcroft for all students, before taking the ACT and SAT for the first time in the spring of junior year.

Dr. Chamberlin shared information with parents about important factors in selective admission reviews, including rigorous classes and strong grades. After lunch, he facilitated an exercise in which the parents and students formed mock admission committees and reviewed four applications to make decisions about which applicants to admit, defer, wait-list, or deny. Special thanks to Dr. Chamberlin for spending his Saturday with us!
