How "The Grinch" Came to Foxcroft: Dance Workshop features Guest Dancer

From Carolyn Burke, Dance Instructor

Before departing for Winter Break, Dance students had a special opportunity to work with a professional dancer, Hillary Ekwall. One of my closest friends, Hillary lives in New York City and comes to visit me and see my shows. This visit was a perfect opportunity to have her teach my students! She taught a combination she learned while on tour with The Grinch, and it was silly, crazy fun! Everyone had a great time and did a wonderful job. We ended the class with a question/answer session where they asked Hillary about touring and auditioning.
Hillary and I met while doing summer community theater in West Hartford, CT, in 2003. We continued the community theater work throughout our college years, and then began doing professional theater post graduation. She's worked professionally in Connecticut, regionally in other states such as New Hampshire, Arizona, and New York, and toured the U.S. with The Grinch, Cabaret, and other productions.

Hillary’s workshop was a great way to end a successful first semester of Dance. Throughout the fall, I based classes around my favorite style of dance, which is modern jazz. Typically we worked on one combination a week, with three classes per week. Senior Dance student Jordan W. taught her own choreography for one class, and I would love for other interested students to explore their own choreography as well. Most of my training is in ballet and modern dance, as well as in creating choreography. Eventually, I'd love to explore other types of dance especially those of the many different cultures the students come from!
