Foxcroft Falls to Cape Henry Collegiate, 2-0, in VISAA DII Field Hockey State Championship

On a blustery, frigid day at the Evergreen Sportsplex in Leesburg, third-ranked Foxcroft School’s bid for its first VISAA Divison II field hockey championship ended Saturday when top-seeded Cape Henry Collegiate posted a 2-0 victory to win its second title in a row.

“It was great game. It was hard fought. We had our opportunities and we never stopped pushing,” said Foxcroft Coach Michelle Woodruff of her team’s performance. “We just couldn’t complete it. Their defense is very strong.”

Foxcroft (11-5) did indeed battle hard until the final whistle. Cape Henry’s rock-hard defense, however, frustrated any Foxcroft attempts at a sustained attack and proved virtually impenetrable, as CHC goaltender Amberly B. was forced to make only two saves. The shutout was the 12th of the season for Dolphins (15-3), who have now won six state field hockey championships since 2005.

CHC scored both of its goals on penalty corners. Midway through the first half, junior Ali G., a 2017 All-State selection, scored with 17:28 left in the period. The game remained tight and tense until CHC sophomore Mackenzie D. converted another corner at 16:28 of the second half.

Foxcroft had two good chances to score on penalty corners and scoring leaders senior Haley B. and junior Allie M. each got off shots but they were turned away by the CHC netminder.

Foxcroft’s defense, led by senior Grace M. and juniors Louise W., and Janie W., played superbly throughout the game and sophomore goaltender Julia G. had nine saves in the game, eight of them coming in the first half.

The biting wind, a challenge for bundled-up spectators, did not disrupt the play in any way, according to Woodruff. Still, the Foxcroft players might have been happier had the rain from previous day continued. Playing their semifinal in a steady downpour Friday, they defeated Delaney Athletic Conference rival Fredericksburg Academy for the second (rainy) time this season, after having suffered two heart-breaking overtime losses.

FA is also the team that thwarted Foxcroft’s earlier DII championship hopes, defeating Foxcroft in the title game in 2012, 2013 and 2015. (Foxcroft played in VISAA Division 1 in 2016 and 2017.)

Despite the final disappointment, Foxcroft had a terrific season, losing only those two games to FA and two to Division I opponents until running into Cape Henry Collegiate Saturday. As the team walked off the field after the championship game Saturday, an advertisement on the roof of a shed behind the playing field was apropos for Foxcroft’s season. In big letters, the advertisement for an orthodontics practice said “Ready, Set, Smile.”

A share of the regular-season DAC chapionship, a No. 3 ranking in the final VISAA regular-season rankings, a decisive victory over Fredericksburg Academy in the state semifinal game, and a runner-up plaque — quite a resume. Indeed, girls, smile. Make it a big one.
