EP Riders’ Roundup: Proficient Indeed!
Exceptional Proficiency program participants sophomore Riley K. and freshman Emma P. competed at the Spring Festival horse shows in Lexington (VA) with outside trainers and they both demonstrated plenty of proficiency, collecting several champion and reserve champion honors along with a slew of ribbons. On the Eventing circuit, senior Annabelle C. won the Junior Novice division at the Maryland Starter Horse Trials in April.
During the Spring Premiere, Emma competed in 38 classes on five mounts and had a very successful weekend from the pony ring to her equitation classes and even in the high children's jumper division. She earned three reserve champion ribbons, one champion ribbon, the Grand Pony Champion honor and the Exhibitor of the Week award. Emma picked up another champion ribbon and one reserve champion prize during the Spring Encore week.
Riley was Reserve Champion in the Younger Junior Hunter 3'3" class during the Spring Premiere week after collecting a first and a second Over Fences. She also earned points with a first-place in the MHSA Hunt, and fourth-place ribbons in both the Maclay and the WIHS Equitation Jumper competitions. During the Encore, Riley collected three second-place ribbons and four thirds in a variety of Hunter and Equitation classes, including the VHSA Hunt Seat (third) and ESEF Dover Hunt Seat.
Also in April, Riley was Junior Hunter 3'3" Champion at the AA-rated Rose Mount Farm Horse Show in Spotsylvania, VA, and the A-rated Maryland National at PG Equestrian in Upper Marlboro, MA.

Annabelle also competed in the Loudoun Hunt Pony Club Horse Trials, where she learned what she needs to work on now. She plans to participate in the Middleburg HT and Eventing Rally for pony club in June, and to get her H-B rating for pony club in September. The H-B certification is one of the U.S. Pony Club’s Standards of Proficiency levels achieved by taking a national exam testing the riders knowledge and skills.
