Courageous Conversations: Sharing Experiences Across Generations

The book Courageous Conversations About Race: A Field Guide for Achieving Equity in Schools challenges school communities to talk in honest and open ways about race and diversity, and — we are proud to report — Foxcroft women, young and old, took up that challenge last Friday with a moving two-hour discussion featuring two panels, one comprised of alumnae and one with current students.

Hosted by the Alumnae Council Diversity and Inclusion Committee, the event was entitled Courageous Conversations with Foxcroft Women: Working Toward Equality, and drew a substantial group of over 30 women to Roomies for what turned into a sometimes heartening/sometimes unsettling, yet honest and open dialogue. The panelists, who were women of color, of international origin, and/or members of the LGBT+ community, explored personal senses of identity and common experiences of community at Foxcroft, often drawing others in attendance into the conversation. 

No grand conclusions were drawn or policy recommendations developed, but the very fact of including such an event in the Reunion Weekend program, and the joy of connecting with students and others from diverse generations, was monumental, many agreed.
