EP Riding Report, Part II
Last week, we began our roundup of students who use our awesome Exceptional Proficiency program to train and compete in equestrian sports with reports on sophomores Olivia D. and Riley K. and freshman Emma P., who competed in Aiken, SC; Gulfport, MS; and Wellington, FL, respectively. This week we hear about sophomore Janie W., junior Matty H., and senior Annabelle C. Watch for a report from Director of Riding Kate Worsham on the riders who trained with her at the Winter Equestrian Festival in an upcoming issue!
Janie W. '20 just returned from spending three months in Wellington, FL, riding out of the Eight Oaks Farm barn, which is based in Middleburg during the warmer months. Her mother, Jane Bishop, reports:
Janie has enjoyed the Winter Equestrian Festival so much this year! She has ridden her hunter Mahoney in the Children’s Hunter division since November, and moved up to the 3'3" Junior Hunters level during Week 4 (January 31-February 4). She has also had the opportunity to show two jumpers. She competed in the Children’s Jumper on Utrillo du Soleil with a 4th-place finish out of 65 competitors!
Janie has also enjoyed increased responsibilities around the barn and ring, including taking horses to and from the ring for other Eight Oaks Farm clients. She has learned so much this year helping in the schooling area with her coaches, Kitty Barker and Sara Taylor. In between full days at the barn and school, Janie has also been prepping for lacrosse season with regular workouts!
Matty H. '19 and Annabelle C. '18 both spent most of the winter right here in Virginia, working with off-campus trainers who are experts in their specialties — dressage (Matty) and eventing (Annabelle). That doesn't mean they don't have news!

Matty began training with Alison Head at Looking Glass Farm, located in Hamilton, VA, in September 2018, shortly after she came to Foxcroft as a new junior. Previously, she trained with Phoebe Devoe-Moore at Thornridge Manor in Glen Arm, MD. She has been working hard with Head, who has trained multiple horses to the Grand Prix level and students to compete in the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (Fédération Équestre Internationale, FEI) levels, and is looking forward to the spring show season.
Annabelle and her horse Zenani (aka Nene) recently received the Blue Ribbon Award from the United States Eventing Association. To earn this honor, a rider and her mount must place in first, second, or third at three events in the same level during the same competition year. Competing in the Beginner Novice division, Annabelle placed first at both the Surefire Farm Horse Trials (HT) in Purcellville and the Hunt Club HT in Berryville, and second at the Loudoun Hunt Pony Club HT in Leesburg.

Annabelle has had a trio of trainers this year. “I was training with Ashley Trier Eventing in The Plains during the fall,” she says. “Once she left for Florida, I started working with an old friend, Karen Nutt, through the winter. And when she returns from Florida next week, I will begin my training with Lynn Symansky, whose barn is located across the street from where I live in Middleburg. Lynn is a hometown hero because she is such an excellent rider with many great accomplishments.”
