Jumping In and Helping Out

A report on Friday's “Jump Into Game Design” coding event by AP Computer Science Principles student Saylor H. ’18

Last Friday night, over thirty girls from grades five through eight came to Foxcroft for our “Jump Into Game Design” coding event. The goal of the evening was to help the students create their own Ms. Pac-Man game while encouraging them to think independently and step outside of their comfort zone.
Foxcroft’s AP Computer Science Principles classes worked throughout the preceding weeks to design and make shirts for the event using the t-shirt press in The Innovation Lab, as well as to familiarize ourselves with the programming software so we could better help our guests.

Every girl who attended the event was determined, thoughtful, and unafraid of a challenge. They sat diligently at their computers, and little yelps of pride dispersed from around the room as they witnessed their games come to life. The Foxcroft students spent time with each girl, rotating through the groups to ensure that everyone was on track. Not only was this event an incredible opportunity for our guests, but it also gave AP Computer Science students the opportunity to test and teach our knowledge.

A lot of thought and consideration was put into this evening, but it was all worth it to see the beaming smiles on the girls’ faces when they successfully created their very own game. A huge thank you to Dr. Evans and the Admission Office — this event would not have been possible without you.
