Second Annual “Teachers Take Flight” Drone Workshop scheduled for Aug. 7-10

Foxcroft School, in partnership with Kashmir World Foundation (KWF), will present the second annual “Teachers Take Flight” drone workshop this summer. Designed to provide educators with the technical skills and curriculum models to engage students in STEM subjects using unmanned aerial systems, the workshop will be held August 7-10 on Foxcroft’s campus in Middleburg, VA.

During the four-day workshop, teachers and professors will fabricate, operate, and customize unmanned aerial systems embedded with single board computers and artificial intelligence to execute mission-focused projects to solve real-world problems that inspire students.

Teachers will also learn ways to use the drones in the classroom, motivating students to integrate science, technology, engineering, and math skills in addressing environmental or humanitarian issues. The workshop promotes open collaboration on curriculum and projects as participants not only acquire and share knowledge during the week, but also become part of a network of ”Teachers Take Flight” participants across the nation.

Last year, Foxcroft School hosted the first “Teachers Take Flight” workshop with educators from Woodbridge (VA) High School, Mountainview (CA) High School, Foxcroft School, and Smith College participating.

Teachers from Woodbridge and Mountainview launched pilot programs this spring, with a total of 182 students participating. In March, Foxcroft STEM Department Chair Maria Evans, Ph.D., and a group from Smith College participated in the first KWF “Fly for Conservation Expedition” at St. Catherines Island, GA.
