We Are the World: Celebrating International Week

"And the winner is . . ."

Raffle prizes, trivia and Kahoot quizzes, and the light-hearted naming of “Miss Foxcroft” from an array of girls dressed to represent countries on three continents were among the highlights of an engaging and educational International Week last week.

Organized by the Global Cultures Club, the week provided the community with various opportunities to learn about and share the diverse cultures that students represent, starting with Morning Meeting greetings in a dozen languages Monday and concluding with a terrific International Gala Friday evening.
The Gala, emceed by GCC co-heads Sumi L. ’18 and Pradyuta P. ’18, featured Latin, Chinese, and K-pop (Korean) dancing; musical presentations from China, India, Taiwan and Vietnam; a presentation about Japan; a poem from Cuba; the ever-popular Chopsticks Challenge; and — the piece de resistance — a fashion show.

Fashion Club leaders and fashion show judges Wendy X. ’19 and Renee X. ’18 put together a fun runway parade featuring traditional and contemporary outfits from seven countries, including the United States. Elle R. ’18 introduced the models, Wendy and Renee were the judges, and Sumi, wearing a traditional Korean costume, was crowned the winner (at least for a few moments).

Sumi was also the lead chef for the Korean dinner that preceded the Gala. She and Hyeri W. ’18 created a menu, shopped for special ingredients, and, with a lot of help from the Meriwether Godsey dining staff, cooked a delicious meal.

Sophomore Joëlle F. and junior Sakiko I. planned and helped create Swiss-German and Japanese dinners, respectively, earlier in the week and MG chefs Brennan Kirby and Sandy Freeman added Indian and Thai-themed meals, too. The ethnic culinary tour is always greatly enjoyed by the community!

Many thanks to the Global Cultures Club — especially Head Michelle A. ’17 and co-heads Sumi L. '18 and Pradyuta P. '18 — and to all the students, faculty, and staff who helped make International Week a memorable event.
