Diversity Conference Opens Students’ Eyes

In support of the School’s ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion, Foxcroft sent three students and one faculty member to Atlanta in December to attend concurrent conferences sponsored by The National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS).

L’Nya C. ’18, Trinity P. ’18, and Carsyn B. ’19 participated in the Student Diversity Leadership Conference, a multiracial, multicultural gathering of high school students focused on self-reflection, cross-cultural communication, and community building. Their chaperone, Stephanie Young, a History teacher and Foxcroft Diversity and Inclusion Committee member, spent her days at the NAIS People of Color Conference dedicated to equity and justice in teaching and learning.

Here’s a report from the girls:
The Student Diversity and Leadership Conference was held December 8-10 in Atlanta, GA, a historical landmark of the civil rights movement. There were approximately 2,000 people involved in the event, a record-breaking number, with 1600 students and 400 administrators, chaperones, and volunteers from all over the country.

The SDLC leaders broke us into groups named after important figures in history such as Frederick Douglass, Ida B. Wells, and Thurgood Marshall. We were all in separate groups, so we interacted with other people for every minute of every day. We participated in various activities that forced us to exit our comfort zone and allowed us to express our feelings in a different way, ultimately benefiting us and giving each of us a new point of view.

This conference opened all of our eyes for different reasons and none of us had the same experience. We all met different people and when we got back to the hotel, we always had something to talk about. We still keep in contact with the friends we made and all definitely want to apply to go again next year.

Attending the SDLC was an honor and the experience was an absolute thrill. Thank you!
