'Give Back" Sept. 29 to Kick Off Foxcroft's 100th with the Centennial Day of Service

The spirit of "giving back," which permeates the Foxcroft School community — and has since its founding in 1914 — is very contagious. As the September 29 Centennial Kickoff Day of Service draws near, more and more alumnae, students, family, and friends are making their plans to participate, either on campus, in the "Cherry Blossom Walk, Fun Run, and Pooch Prance for Breast Cancer," or at one of the growing number of locations across the country and around the world. It's fitting.

As the September 29 Centennial Kickoff Day of Service draws near, more and more alumnae, students, family, and friends are making their plans to participate, either on campus, in the "Cherry Blossom Walk, Fun Run, and Pooch Prance for Breast Cancer," or at one of the growing number of locations across the country and around the world. It's fitting.
"Community service has been part of every Foxcroft girl's experience for the past 100 years," said Karen Thorn Lilly, a 1984 graduate who chairs the Centennial Day of Service Committee. "I cannot think of a more appropriate way to honor the school than to join other Foxcroft women from across the generations to engage collectively in community service."
Hundreds of breast health supporters, cancer survivors, family, and friends — including four-legged ones — are expected at Foxcroft for what is a uniquely local event that began in 2007 as "Nanette's Walk," in honor of a local victim of the disease. Foxcroft has been part of it from the beginning, comprising the largest contingent of participants every year and raising more than $26,000 for the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation, a Middleburg-based organization that directs 90 percent of its grants to help women in Loudoun and Fauquier counties.
Scores of additional individuals will take part in the Centennial Day of Service elsewhere. Through early August, more than a dozen events in locations from New York, Charlotte, and Los Angeles to London, and Oxford, England, had been scheduled. Activities range from serving in a soup kitchen and sprucing up an inner-city school to offering pro bono marketing services and doing a 300-mile bike ride for AIDS. On campus, a DJ, prizes, and other special activities will highlight the day and all — including dogs — are welcome. Participants will have a few options for the three-mile walk/run, which begins at 1 pm, including a flat course along campus roads and a wooded cross-country trail.
