The pursuit of LEED certification for this building presents an exciting opportunity for our students as construction progresses. The School, in collaboration with Forrester Construction Company, the builders and project managers, is offering a seminar entitled Project Green Building: Following a Year in the Construction of LEED Certified Building.
According to Academic Dean Alex O. Northrup, “Twenty-six students have been selected to participate in this seminar which follows the construction of the new dorm over the 2012-2013 academic year. Foxcroft girls are meeting on a monthly basis directly with the various professionals responsible for different aspects of the construction process, and are examining each step in depth, including the design process, modeling, foundations, mechanical and electrical systems, and sustainability. Upon completion, students will have a nuanced understanding of the entire construction process, with a particular emphasis on environmentally friendly building.”
The first of these seminars took an in depth look at foundation systems. After a very informative lecture led by four members of the Forrester team the students were broken into groups and had a little hands-on time solving problems, digging holes, and making their own foundations. Then, decked out in safety gear, the girls got up close and personal with the construction site as they took a peak at the foundation systems being used in the new dormitory.
