Robotics Team Competes in FIRST Tech Challenge

Last Sunday, the Foxcroft Robotics team traveled to Herndon High School to participate in their first event of the season. Foxcroft competes in the FIRST Tech Challenge, which provides a framework for students to develop their design, building, and coding skills. Our team met three days a week during athletic practice time, and while their coaches, Mr. Northrup and Ms. Do, were present, the students worked independently to solve the challenges presented to them by the competition.
The FIRST Tech Challenge is designed to be cooperative. Each of the 48 rounds of the competition consists of four student robots organized into two “teams,” trying to earn the most points. So while there were 40 different teams at the event, Foxcroft was always paired with another school group. “It was fun working with the other teams that we were partnered with in our competitive matches — everyone was really nice and were eager to work with us,” said Emili R. ’24. However, Foxcroft was the only all-girls team in the competition. “A coach from another school wanted to know how to get more girls on his team,” said Helen V. ’23. “I told him he should work at an all-girls school!”

This was the first real (non-COVID) competition for Foxcroft’s fledgling robotics team, and it came with some growing pains. “It was a great learning experience, and I know what we need to do to improve next year,” said Emmy Q. ’24. The team is particularly thankful for the work of graduating seniors Rebecca C. and Helen, who were integral to starting the team last year. We will be looking for new team members interested in learning STEM skills and having fun!
