A Day of Service and Reflection Honoring the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This past Monday, in lieu of classes, students participated in a day-long celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with a morning of service projects and an afternoon learning about the unsung Sheroes of the Civil Rights Movement.
The morning’s projects ranged from making hygiene kits, snack packs, and 600 sandwiches to sorting books and clothing donations and writing letters for veterans. Students then spent the afternoon learning about female activists from the Civil Rights Movement. Each advisory group selected, researched, and then shared a short presentation on their chosen activist. From Coretta Scott King, Josephine Baker, Ruby Bridges, and Ida B. Wells to Leah Chase, Septima Poinsette Clark, Virginia Foster Durr, Daisy Bates, and more, students shared what they had learned about 24 different activists.

As Dr. King coordinated efforts during the Civil Rights Movement, he worked to impact and improve the lives of all people. With Service being one of our core values that guide the entire School community — this Day of Service allowed our students a space to reflect on the work of leaders like Dr. King and take an active role in the work that remains. A special thank you to Dean of Inclusive Excellence Whittney Preston and Associate Director of Admission for Access and Inclusion Krystyna Martin for coordinating and organizing this day of service!
