A Strong Start to a Year of Service

From Experiential Learning & Student Life Coordinator Beth O’Quinn

One of the best parts of my job is getting Foxcroft students out into our community, where they can provide needed support to others through service. They never fail to impress me with their work ethic and generosity of spirit.
During these first few months of school, our students have enthusiastically participated in many great service efforts. They have risen early to tutor at Banneker Elementary School before the start of our morning classes and helped Banneker's PTO keep their Fall Festival running smoothly with fun and games for the students and their families. It’s delightful to see our students working in the hallways and classrooms of Banneker, providing the extra attention some of the youngsters need as they learn to read, write, and develop their math skills. I can promise that our students get as much reward from that experience as the little ones.

Many of our students have given their time to support Mobile Hope by working in the terrific new thrift shop called “Graffiti and Silk” or going to Leesburg to help with the free food distribution Mobile Hope provides. In addition, our engineering class is working to design and build a new sign for the thrift shop. Students have also walked in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and sold bracelets to benefit the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation

Plans are in place to train a new group of students to assist in the lesson program at Sprout Therapeutic Riding and to aid our local boy scout troops with Scouting For Food. This food drive will help restock the shelves at our local food pantry, Seven Loaves. Be on the lookout for more information in our upcoming newsletters about Foxcroft’s food drive here on campus to assist local families needing extra food over the public school holiday.

Throughout the holiday season, our students will volunteer to help the Town of Middleburg by providing face painting for young children at the Middleburg Christmas Parade and creating holiday cards to send to the residents of Spring Arbor Assisted Living. During Wintermission, students will have the opportunity to sign up for the Service Sampler class, exploring and assisting with the work of a different non-profit each day.

There are so many ways Foxcroft students have had and will have a positive impact on our community through service. I think it is safe to say that the service they give to others will have a lasting impact on them as well!
