Passing Down… and Moving Up: Athletic Association Banquet Honors Tradition

Each spring, the Athletic Association Banquet showcases the importance of student leadership at Foxcroft. Departing seniors pass down their club head positions to underclassmen eager to step into these roles, and Fox/Hound officers and mascots pin their hats onto those who will carry on this beloved tradition. Last night, the members of Athletic Association put together a banquet that truly captured the significance of this time-honored tradition.
Adapting their original plans, the Athletic Association transformed Brick House Lawn with faux hanging vines and blooms draped across string lights and archways to create an enchanting “Secret Garden,” the theme for the evening. Tables were set with centerpieces of dainty teacups and artfully decorated cupcakes, each topped with an edible butterfly or flower. Between their decorations and the perfect spring weather, you couldn’t have asked for a better setting for dinner and the leadership hand-downs.

After everyone was seated at their tables, senior Athletic Association Heads Amelia F. and Lilly R. welcomed the assembled students, faculty, and staff. Dinner was served, cupcakes were enjoyed, and then the program got underway. Junior Co-Heads Molly C., Lucy M., Winley T., and Olivia W. each invited club leaders to the podium, who shared reflections on the year and then announced their successors for 2022-23. The newly elected club leaders are stepping into big shoes to continue the important work of groups like Archery Club, Beekeeping Club, Cyber Patriot, Hand in Hand, Philosophy & Ethics Club, Service Organization, We the People, and so many others that enhance the residential and co-curricular experience here at Foxcroft.

Another community engagement opportunity that brought students together with their dorm mates this year was Battle of the Dorms. After calculating the results for the year, Head Prefect Lilly R. ’22 was thrilled to announce the winner — Reynolds Dorm! Congratulations!

The final portion of the evening showcased the spirited tradition of Fox/Hound. This year’s officers and mascots took a few minutes to reflect on the year and what it meant to hold their positions before announcing who they would pass their positions to for next year. There were laughs, tears, and smiles that all exemplify how special the Fox/Hound tradition is to the community. Special congratulations to our 2022-23 Fox and Hound Captains Lucy M. ’23 and Isabelle M. ’23. Our departing captains Amelia F. ’22 and Nia D. ’22 have been great role models in leading both teams with spirit and enthusiasm all year!

Many thanks to the Athletic Association and faculty advisor Michelle Woodruff, as well to the Dining Hall staff for the wonderful meal and cupcakes, to Maintenance for all their help with the setup, Matt Norko and Judy Gamboa for lending their technical expertise, and of course Hound Backer Patty Boswell and Foxy Fellow Alex Northrup, for all their support making this wonderful evening come together!
