A Fine Arts Takeover

Monday, April 25, marked the first day of an immersive, week-long Fine Arts takeover. It all started with a burst of visual arts beaming throughout Schoolhouse. Exhibits first popped up in the basement, enticing voters to select their favorite amongst a competitive collection of Science Photography Contest entries (click here to see the list of winners), including two new bonus categories “Phobias” and “Architecture.” On the main floor, nine seniors carefully curated their solo exhibitions and competed for a spot in Foxcroft’s permanent collection. A portfolio of ceramics work by Jordan M. ‘22 gained the most attention, and her sea-themed totem titled “Into the Deep” won the prestigious honor of Best in Show.

It wasn’t just Schoolhouse that experienced this Fine Arts takeover. The Audrey Bruce Currier Library also boasted a change in the regular Morning Meeting routine. A talented troupe of performers from Chorale, Mainstage, Dance, and various instrumentalists elicited enthusiastic cheers from the room. The community also witnessed the formal induction ceremony as five students and two faculty members joined Foxcroft’s chapter of the International Thespian Society for their dedicated service to the Theater Department.

There were two separate days set aside for this year’s Festival of Arts Workshops to allow students the freedom and flexibility to immerse themselves in the artmaking of their choosing. A wide gamut of offerings were hosted by club leaders, enthusiastic artists, and interested faculty members who provided instruction in pottery wheel throwing, needle felting, improv, motion photography, and so much more. Students even got off campus to support their neighbors at Banneker Elementary School by painting games — designed by our very own EPICS (Engineering Projects in Community Service) team — on the blacktop.
Arts Week concluded with a brilliant rendition of Tom Jones’ The Fantasticks. The audience was captivated by both the dramatic story and enticing music. Everyone left the week feeling inspired, entertained, and reinvigorated with awe and appreciation for all art forms.
